June 13, 2003, Volume 3 Number 24

Dear "Guam Food Guy" Reader,

We're always hearing about businesses honoring their top performers and sales "superstars", however, did you know that there were 16 Guam Girl Scouts who sold over 500 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies during the 2002-2003 cookie sale campaign? During a recent Annual Meeting of the Guam Girl Scouts, Inc., an awards ceremony recognized these young "superstars" for their outstanding sales achievements. The top five producers received a glass plaque and a collector's edition silk spotted bear doll from the Girl Scout Cookie Bakery. In ascending order, we present the top five sellers and their box totals: Loren Magante (864); Stephanie McDonald (948); Britney Ogle (1,000); Brittni Flores (1,176); and (tied for 1st place) sisters, Krystle Pinauin Ramos and Ailini Pinauin Ramos (1260 boxes each!) We applaud all of the Girl Scout and Brownie members of Troops 006 and 0079 who made the 500-plus box level. We all know how irresistible these cookies are, but these girls are also getting real-life sales experience. They take orders, track their sales and deliver cookies to their customers. It's a great introduction to money management, goal setting, and customer service. This activity is just one of many that our Girl Scouts are involved with which will leave a positive impression in their lives. We encourage and recognize these achievements. Bravo, Guam Girl Scouts!

Around The Island - Genji@Roy's, Ban Thai, Planet Hollywood Rush Hour, Firefly

Genji has been sorely missed by it's many regular customers. In response to these hungry folks, the Hilton has come up with a brilliant solution - Genji Lunch@Roy's! You will be able to enjoy the very popular appetizer and dessert buffets from Genji and select from entrees created through the culinary collaboration of Chef Eddie of Roy's and Chef Danny from Genji. The fun starts Monday, June 16 and lunch is served weekdays from 11:30am until 2pm. We think reservations are good idea. Call them at 646-DINE(3463).

Ban Thai is back in the business of serving Tumon's best Thai food! They will again feature their $7.95 lunch buffet from 11am - 2pm Monday through Friday. Dinner is served every night except Sunday, from 5:30pm - 11pm. We congratulate Lek and her staff at Ban Thai for all their rebuilding efforts.

Planet Hollywood is offering an exceptional lunch value. For only $7.95 you can select a great meal from their 'Rush Hour' menu and it includes all of the Pepsi product you can drink. A great feature of this offer is the extended lunch time period - you can order any time from 11am until 3pm. Great for early or late lunchers! Call for reservations and info 647-STAR(7827)

We had the rare opportunity to have lunch at Firefly Bistro and were absolutely delighted at the quality of the food served. The Fish & Chips ordered were made from large pieces of fresh ahi in a crispy, non-greasy batter and the chips were seasoned perfectly. Accompanied with plenty of tangy tartar sauce this was a real treat. Even better was the Roasted Chicken and Apple Salad. A variety of very fresh greens were topped with apple wedges, blue cheese, candied almonds, diced roasted potatoes (a very nice touch) and a perfectly roasted chicken breast full of the flavors of rosemary and garlic. The dressing was a champagne vinaigrette. While this is not an inexpensive lunch ($12.95 per dish) it was well worth the splurge. Call 477-2565 for reservations.

Seoul Restaurant - Great Lunch Specials for Quality Korean Favorites

Seoul Restaurant is located across the street from the Reef Hotel and shares a building with Fuji Ichiban Ramen and Miki Market. You can't miss its huge red and blue sign, nor the blue and red Korean yin-yang national emblem on the front glass doors. It is obviously a Korean restaurant smack dab in the middle of our tourist district, the kind of place a lot of locals tend to avoid for a number of reasons, price being a major one.

Well, have I got good news for you! Seoul Restaurant is a remarkable find, serving traditional Kalbi and Bulgogi in a manner and at prices that will amaze you. Seoul Restaurant has a lunch special that discounts fifteen of their most popular entrees by 35%! The Kalbi (charbroiled marinated beef rib) is regularly $17.95, but during lunch it's priced at $12. It is cooked in front of you on a table grill that uses special briquettes imported from Korea. The aroma and flavor imparted into this marinated beef by these coals defies description and begs trying for yourself. I will say that it's the tenderest, tastiest Kalbi I've had on Guam.

Although I've passed by Seoul Restaurant countless times, and have even stopped in a couple of times for fact-finding as well as to say hi to friends who were dining, I'd never actually sat down to eat here, though it was always on my Food Guy "to do" list. It's possible I'd have put off reviewing it even more if I'd not received several e-mail recommendations from good friend and former GPD chief, Ed Kabina. He and wife, Toni, are avid newsletter readers and gave a glowing endorsement to Seoul Restaurant. They were so right!
