Dear "Guam Food Guy" Reader,

This is going to be one of those high velocity weekends! The "Bird Man" Rally will bring Guam into the Asian media spotlight with competing teams mainly from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. There will be events spanning 3 days, kicking off with a concert and a fireworks display in Tumon on Friday night. If you've not had an opportunity to physically see the launch ramp firsthand, you should go down to Ipao Beach (on the Hilton side of Ipao's public parking area) and do's an impressive piece of solid, I-beam construction! The flying competition will be held Saturday and Sunday morning, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Dear to my heart is the Guam Girl Scout Auction & Wine Tasting Fundraiser being held this Friday at the Westin Resort and another great organization, the Salvation Army, will be holding an Appreciation Dinner at the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa at the same time. Saturday the Guam Marketing Association is hosting its annual Gala Ball and Awards Banquet also at the Westin.

SPAMô Cook-Off Island Style 2002 Winners

Congratulations to Mamie Balajadia, First Place Winner in the SPAMô Cook-Off Island Style Competition that concluded this past Saturday at Guam Premium Outlet's Center Court. Her SPAMô BAM creation was essentially a sushi roll made with SPAMô then dipped and fried in a tempura batter. Pat Feore was the Second Place Winner, and her SPAMô Curry Fury was certainly "hot" competition among a field consisting of creative, appetizing, and well-prepared SPAMô recipes. I consider all of the contestants "winners" for having such terrific imaginations! I expect to see them all next year! Look for all the winning recipes coming soon to the SPAMô recipe area.

Guam Girl Scout's Auction & Wine Tasting Event - May 17 at The Westin

Please join us for the 5th Annual Auction & Wine Tasting in support of Guam Girl Scouts, this Friday evening, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Westin Resort Guam's Somnak Ballroom. A $25.00 donation will get you into this very popular fundraiser, which will feature an array of both silent and live auction items, as well as special raffle prizes. The list of raffle prizes is impressive and the items which will be available for the auctions are excellent. There will be a fine selection of premium wines available for sampling, as well as delectable appetizers prepared by the culinary wizards at the Westin. Tickets are available at the door. Celebrity Chefs' Cup Competition's Haute Cuisine Private Dinner Party

We have it on good authority that a special culinary event will take place the evening of May 20. As you may recall, the University of Guam's Endowment Foundation, in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the university, teamed up with the Micronesia Chef's Association to hold the First Annual Celebrity Chefs' Cup Competition and Gala Dinner April 8 at the Hyatt Regency Guam. The Grand Prize for the evening was the opportunity to have the champion Chef prepare a fabulous four-course dinner at your residence. This once-in-a-lifetime event is supposed to happen this coming Monday night. The winning chef, the Hilton Guam Resort & Spa's Executive Chef Christophe Durliat, will prepare a feast for the raffle winners Mr. & Mrs. Lance Hagans. We'll let you know more about this incredible event in our next issue!

Le Tasi Bistro and Great Deep Brewing Company - Craft Beers & Ales

If you have a thirst for unique and special microbrewed craft beers, your prayers have been answered by the Great Deep Brewing Company. The initial launch of these fresh, full flavored craft beers was just a few weeks ago and the word from happy customers is that they are excellent. Brewed right on the premises of Le Tasi Bistro, these beers are inspired by several brewing traditions which hold fast to the ideals of small batches prepared with care using the finest ingredients available.

One of Guam's finest chefs, Bertrand Haurillon, has created a selection of Tapas to complement the beers and these are available during Le Tasi Bistro's recently introduced "Contemplation Hour" which is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and all evening long on Thursdays. Mimi Ramen in Upper Tumon - Fresh & Tasty Japanese & Chinese Food

Mimi Ramen is easily passed by several thousand cars each day. Probably everyone on Guam has driven by this little eatery located along Marine Drive, on the ground floor of a two-story building that houses PostNet, Paradise Body Therapy, RadioCom, and the Mariposa Lounge (just above it). You can't help but notice it's unique design, with arches and A-frame angles. Boonsri Plaza is just north and there's parking in front and behind.

Although you may have driven past Mimi Ramen on your way to the Micronesia Mall, you probably were too busy to give it much thought. However, now, I'm going to give you a good reason to stop in and visit Mimi's some "food for thought!"

I was tipped off by a reader to try the gyoza at Mimi Ramen. They said it was really good, ranking among the best. Before entering, I expected to find a typical Japanese ramen fact, that's probably what it was about three years ago before changing owners. The new owner, Nancy, is a young Chinese lady hailing from Bejing. She will greet you, seat you, take your order and deliver it to you. The only other worker is the cook, Mr. Wang, who spends most of his time in the glass enclosed kitchen area, behind a service counter where customers can sit when the six tables are full.
