Watermelon Lemon-Limeade
My mother used to make this as watermelons were plentiful and inexpensive. This recipe is very close to what I remember it tasting like.

8 cups watermelon, cut in 2 inch pieces, seeded
1 cup simple syrup* adjust according to watermelon sweetness
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 Tbsp grenadine (optional used mostly for color)

Puree watermelon in small batches in the blender then strain into a pitcher pressing on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Now you have a choice, some people like the solids added to the drink and others don't. Do what you like. Pour the watermelon into a pitcher, add simple syrup, lemon and lime juice and grenadine and stir to blend. Put in refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour.

Serve in tall glasses filled with ice. Garnish with lemon and lime twists if desired.

*Basic simple syrup is 1 cup of water to 1/2 cup sugar. This standard 2 to 1 ratio can be used to make larger quantities. Place water and sugar in a small heavy saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves then bring to a boil over high heat for approximately 2 minutes. Do not use hot - refrigerate until cold, approximately 3 hours.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings
