Nuts & Grains
Restaurant Review by Ken Stewart, The Guam Food Guy
How about healthy for a change? Nuts and Grains is located just behind Oka Payless in Tamuning off Farenholt Avenue, and are open Monday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. They are closed on Sunday! ( A good reason to review them today!)
They are more than a retail store for a variety of health-related and natural products, for every conceivable human need, from Tom's of Maine All Natural Toothpaste, to deodorants, herbal teas, vitamins, extracts, essences, and a large selection of nutritional foods, condiments, natural oils and ingredients. Nuts & Grains is a great place to eat, which is ideal especially when you are hungry!! Imagine, instead of going shopping on an empty stomach when you are tempted to buy everything you see, you can order your lunch, then walk through the aisles stocked with the various food items, perhaps selecting a few to purchase after dining. Then after you've sated your appetite, you can continue shopping and not feel guilty about excessive "binge" shopping.
Lucy (one of the super-friendly staff members) greeted us after we'd walked in and said, "Don't tell me, you're having the Grilled Chicken Burger and...." she was right on the money.....I did cravethat tasty sandwich. My partner had the Greek Pita, and we would have even tried one of the daily specials which was a Spinach and Mushroom Quiche, but they'd just run out of it (it was nearly 3 p.m.) and though the other quiche specials looked good, I'm crazy about spinach! Next time!
What makes this Chicken Burger the best for me? Let's start with the bun. Whole wheat--perfect and required for my diet. McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, and KFC, (as well as all restaurants) should consider this healthier, more nutritious choice of bun--they'd get more of my business, and perhaps that of other people who have become aware of the need for enhancing the quality of food in their diets. The chicken breast pieces were marinated in a seasoning mix and grilled to a juicy perfection. Accompanied by fresh lettuce, red tomato slices, alfalfa sprouts, and finally topped with a special sauce, this sandwich meets my meal needs for meal #4 of 6 that I must eat six days a week! The sandwich comes in a basket along with pretzels, something I can't eat 'til Sundays. This meal is $5.50.
Drinks vary from natural sodas, to herbal teas , fruit drinks, and beverages not typically found in most grocery nor convenience stores. Guilt-free drinking, too! That's one of the wonders about this place....you can have a Root Beer or Ginger Ale, and you spend part of the time marvelling over the healthy ingredients on the label while savoring the taste! It's amazing being aware of how the choices we make can affect our lives!
The Daily Specials come with your choice of soup or salad, and are priced at $6.95. Among the sandwich selection are: Tuna, Turkey, Egg Salad, Nuts & Grains Burger, Veggie Sandwich, Organic Peanut Butter & Raw Honey Sandwich, and Organic Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich--all with prices ranging from $3.00 to $5.50. Did I say Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich? Well, I've not gone that far down the health food road....but you'll never know! I do like both peanut butter and bananas.....!
Salads include the House, Caesar, Spinach, or Greek, in small and large servings; also Grilled Chicken Caesar and Chef's Salad, the latter priced at $5.95 each. I've yet to try these, but I'm sure they're made with the same pride and care they use to make my Chicken Burger.
Nuts and Grains has a large following of loyal customers who come in and talk to owner Libby Pier and Lucy on a first name-basis in this casual, relaxed, and almost homey atmosphere. A continuous stream of customers come in for Smoothies, which include the Very Berry, Strawberry Delight, Mighty Mix, Magic Mango, and Tropical Oasis. All use fruits and Vanilla Frozen Yogurt. A small smoothie goes for $3.00 and the large is $5.00.
I've become a cookie addict---Raisin and Oatmeal---probably the best we've ever had! Just a bite of this terrific, home-made creation will bring a smile of delight to your face! Guilt-free eating, again!! Only whole wheat flour and honey are used with the raisins and oats. Betcha can't just eat one!!!
The Fat Free Home Made Muffins are good to eat, too, but I love the cookies. Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal are in the 2nd cookie jar at the counter, and we always make sure that one of the jars is empty by the time we leave!
The Greek Pita was stuffed with fresh lettuce, tomato, cucumber, yellow pepper, olives and feta cheese, and you could add as much vinegar and oil dressing as you like. I enjoyed the bites I had!
Try Nuts & Grains for a healthier perspective and change from some of your dining routines. You will be pleasantly surprised by some of the ingredient substitutions you could make in the foods you normally purchase and consume. I truly believe that this is yet another way to take control of your life by choosing the type and quality of foods you eat.
