Sol Juice
Restaurant Review by Ken Stewart, The Guam Food Guy
February 2001

You'll know at first glance that the colorful signage above the entrance of SOL JUICE appeals to one's sense of curiosity about what exotic experience waits within. There's something tropical, islandy, and "junglish" about this place, which has Tiki torches illuminating the entranceway and small tables forming Sol Juice's outside dining room.

Smooth Latino melodies play, joined with salsa Cuban lyrics sung by the talented Ruben Blades, making your hands and feet move involuntarily to their enchanting, beckoning rhythms. This place promises a good time.

I was greeted by Trisha's smiling face when I walked in, and was given a menu as I sat at the counter. As my eyes roamed the inside I was struck by the use of bright colors--oranges, yellows, greens, violets, and blues...fresh, lively, colors that brought animation. Manager Brent Pitts, aka "Flaco", began explaining some of the menu options to me. His past work opening Carmen's Cha Cha Cha and Not Just Juice, prepared him for his present position at Sol Juice, which he just loves and you can see it in his bright eyes and wide smile! He's going to make sure you enjoy your visit to Sol Juice!

The Counter Specials include:

Wraps, using a low-fat tortilla:

The Veggie has cucumbers, shredded carrots, lettuce, homemade sals, jack cheese and their secret cream sauce. ($3.50)

Chicken : $4.00 Ham & Jack: $4.00

JAFFLES: Toasted and sealed grilled sandwiches, with white or wheat bread, & your choice of two fillings: (Ham, Jack Cheese, Cucumbers, Strawberry Jam, Chicken, Salsa, Peanut Butter). ($2.50)

Chips: Homemade Tortilla Chips -

Chips on the Side : ($1.00) Chips with salsa : ($3.50) Nachos, cheese/chicken/salsa : $6.00 Flaco's special hot salsa w/ tequila - $3.00 (really good!!)

Quesadilla's : Chicken & Cheese : $4.50 Cheese : $3.50

I had the Ham & Jack Cheese Jaffle, Chips with Flaco's special hot salsa (w/tequila), and a Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla. The Jaffle was tasty, reminding me of my childhood love of grilled cheese and ham sandwiches, only with a different twist.....a grilled ham & cheese sandwich in the form of a waffle! The waffle baker presses and seals the sandwich and gives it a crusty, crunchy edge. The cheese is melted perfectly and the ham makes it all quite good. It's a small sandwich, not enough to fill you up, and leaves room for other great eats. The Quesadilla was well-prepared, and came with a fresh diced tomato, onion, and cilantro salsa on a bed of shredded lettuce. The chicken meat was boiled, eliminating both fat and grease.

I liked the home-made chips, and each salsa they have offers unique tastes. Nothing prepares you for the imaginative "Flaco's Special Tequila Hot Sauce"! It's not so much hot as it is different, in an irresistable way!

The "Mango Madness" Margarita ($4.00) is Flaco's creation. He experimented with several ingredients to come up with the right combination. The margarita glass is made by Jose Cuervo, and has a cactus plant stem. When I saw that beverage, I was impressed by it's size and color. The flavor was unbelievable! THe freshness and unique sweet flavor of the mango certainly brought a new dimension to this otherwise traditional beverage.

Among the other beverages are Juice by the glass ( 16 oz., watermelon, guava, apple, calamansi, and pineapple--for $1.50); Frosted Juices (Papaya, Mango, Pineapple, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Banana, Strawberry, - 16 oz. $4.50, 20 oz - $5.00 and 24 oz. is $5.50); and SMOOTHIES, which comprise an interesting list of drink names, from Smooth Sailing to Gianni Appleseed, with prices ranging from $4.00 (16oz.) to $6.00 (24 oz.) China Mist teas are also available.

For the strict, health-conscious drinkers, Sol Juice will squeeze fresh carrots, celery and apple into delicious drinks (16 oz. for $4.00, 20 oz. for $5.00, and 24 oz. is $6.00).

Sol Juice had been acquired this last year by Tana and Rolenda Faasuamalie, who came up with the idea of serving Jaffles and other unique items. One of the most memorable experiences I had was having a bite of Rolenda's homemade carrot cake! This was beyond delicious! The cake was thick, filled with rich flavors and ingredients, and topped by a nice layer of creamy frosting sprinkled with nuts. This generous portion (wedge) of Rolenda's carrot cake is only $2.00! I've paid a lot more for 1/2 this size!!

There's an energy and personality about Sol Juice. One can't help but think that they are certainly providing a unique indoor and outdoor food and beverage adventure that can be enjoyed by both locals and our visitors. The irrepressibly talented Flaco is determined to make Sol Juice a special experience for all of his guests, and he's committed to fulfill Sol Juice's mission, which is to "Energize Your Spirit, Refresh Your Sol!"
