Hava Java Cafe's Popular Make Me A Sandwich Menu
Restaurant Review by Ken Stewart, The Guam Food Guy
July 2001

5/12/04 NOTE: Hava Java has reopened in a new downtown Hagatna location on Aspinall Ave across the street from BankPacific and behind the Hagatna Post Office.

If you've not experienced Hava Java Cafe's "Make Me A Sandwich" menu special, then you've got something good to look forward to doing soon! Hava Java Cafe, one of Guam's first gourmet coffee houses, is located on the Rte 4 corner of the Agana Shopping Center. Founded by Carol Ragan, who spent years researching coffee in preparation for opening her business, and who is recognized as Guam's coffee expert, launched her sandwich service within this past year. There probably aren't many coffee lovers who've not enjoyed at least one of Hava Java's espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, mochaccinos, white chocolate mochas, mexican mochas, red eyes, frutta granitas or iced coffees.

Open Monday - Fridays at 6:30 am, and 8:00 am on Saturday and Sunday, sandwiches are made to order starting at 10:00 am and are available until closing time, which is 8:00 pm Monday - Thursday, 9:00 pm Friday, 8:00 pm Saturday, and 6:00 pm Sunday. It's really a simple process to get the sandwich of your choice. Just fill in the checklist on the "Make Me a Sandwich" order form. Meat choices are Roast Beef, Turkey, Ham, Bacon (BLT), Chicken Salad, and Tuna Salad. Cheese is 50 cents extra, with a choice of American, Swiss and Provolone. Veggies include lettuce, tomato, red onion, alfalfa sprouts, and dill pickles. Dressings include mayonnaise, fat-free mayo, mustards (American, Dijon, Hot English), olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Bread types are white, whole wheat, rye and french baguette. The price range for these sandwiches are $4.50 - $5.45, and include a free iced coffee or iced tea, as well as a delicious home-made cole slaw.

I had a Chicken Salad sandwich on a french baguette. It was a healthy, fresh, and satisfying meal. The baguette had an ideal firm texture and hard crust, and was not too big to bite. The ingredient portions were generous. I remember watching a table of three ladies, each enjoying different sandwiches, on a prior visit...they all looked so good that I knew I just had to try one on a future visit. I did, and certainly enjoyed myself, without feeling stuffed. I also had an oatmeal raisin cookie...one among several of their oven-baked creations.

An ideal place to sit alone to read or to chat with company, Hava Java Cafe has an interesting selection of coffees and accessories for sale. There are even a few antiques laying on shelves. Be sure to ask Carol for an explanation of anything you find...everything she sells has a special meaning and story! Call 477-0600 if you want to order your sandwich in advance for take-out. Try one of Hagatna's treasures - Hava Java Cafe's coffee beverages and fresh deli sandwich! Go ahead - please yourself!
